This article discusses frequently asked questions on the the SumUp Point of Sale (POS) Hardware:

1- Do I have to use SumUp hardware or can I use my own hardware?

You can also use your own hardware. Many receipt printers are compatible with our system. Every iPad after the second generation can be used as well. However, we still recommend using our hardware to guarantee a flawless and safe experience.

 

2- Why does the SumUp Point of Sale starter package contain a router?

The router connects all components securely and reliably. Our router is pre-configured so that it automatically recognizes all components and simply needs to be plugged into your existing router.

The POS network is encrypted in order to provide additional security to your business transactions.

 

3- Do I need a fixed internet connection or does the system also work via mobile data? Is a constant internet connection required

An internet connection is required for accepting card payments. We recommend using a strong wifi network, though you could also use a mobile data connection. Using a slow or sporadic connection might affect performance.

You can use the POS system if you are experiencing network outage, or without an active internet. Though in this situation you can only accept cash payments. In order to accept card payments and verify the transactions you need an internet connection.

 

4- Is the iPad locked or can I use all features of a regular iPad?

The iPad is not locked and will function fully - as any other - of course you are welcome to use it as you wish. However we recommended keeping it in the SumUp stand and charged ready to use.  

 

5- What kind of paper is required for the receipt printer?

The receipt printer requires standard thermo receipt-rolls (width 80mm). The hardware package includes a receipt roll.

 

6- How do I connect a barcode scanner to the system?

A compatible barcode scanner can be purchased in our shop. If you do not have access to the barcode feature yet please contact our support at support.pos@sumup.com. You should also get familiar with the first steps of the Point of Sale App and the Point of Sale Cloud.

Setup of the barcode scanner in the Point of Sale Cloud

Add a new article or edit your existing articles. In the article menu type in the article's code in the field "EAN Code". Each code can only be used once. Save the information by clicking on the "+"-symbol next to the added barcode. Next, click on the blue "Save"-button.

Scan barcodes

In the Point of Sale App you can scan barcodes with the iPad's camera or an external barcode scanner. In order to use the iPad camera, first click on the "PLU"-button and next on the barcode symbol. When scanning the barcode, the app automatically adds the underlying article to the basket.

Connect barcode scanner

Make sure that the scanner is in iOS mode. Turn on the scanner and scan the following barcode:

The scanner is now in the iOS mode.

Next, open the settings in your iPad and open the Bluetooth menu. Choose "Socket CHS" from available devices. After having connected the scanner with the iPad, open the Admin menu in the SumUp POS App and click on "Load shop data". You can now scan EAN codes that you have defined in the Cloud.
